Default Sticking in First Gear

MY 2004 S60 2.5T PETROL MANUAL keeps sticking in first gear. However when I lift the plastic trim which surrounds the gear knob. I have noticed that there is a thin white plastic sheath around a wire cable and rod. The plastic sheath is constantly moving towards the gear stick thus allowing the cable to bend which then leaves the car stuck in 1st gear. As a temporary fix I push the sleeve towards the front of the car and it and it is resolved because the cable can not bend . Can anybody tell me how this gets fixed and is it some thing more sinister that is causing it. thanks
