Default New owner, Door lock and handbrake trouble...

Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a little advice - I'm about to buy a 2002 VOLVO S60 D5 2.4 Turbo with a nasty prang in the passenger door and a faulty passenger door lock - doesnt always stay locked.

If I buy a replacement door, should I get one with the locking mech already fitted so that I fix this problem at the same time or do I need to repair the existing lock (Is it coded to the car etc?) as I'm thinking for a little money I can fix 2 faults in one

Also, apparently the handbrake hardly stays on, you have to pull it right on to get it to work, so I'm assuming the cable is knackered. Is it fairly easy to replace the handbrake cable?

Do you think there is anything else I need to be looking at?

Thanks in advance.

Get a door with the lock it should be a straight swop. The handbrake just needs taking up on the adjuster which is under the leather cover on the handbrake lever. It is a 10mm nut.Hope this helps.

Cannot comment on whether the door lock is coded or not. However the handbrake problem may not be the cables. These cars have a nasty habit of casting brake shoes when they delaminate, (potentially writing off the hub in the process,) which would also produce the symptoms you have described! Given the age of the car I would advise investigation and given the low costs involved replacement shoes regardless for peace of mind. Several good threads on this subject including photos. Search handbrake woes or similar to avoid grief. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll have a dig round on here and see what I can find - It only passed the MOT in August so no idea how the handbrake became so bad, so quickly but I'll check

The guys said the car has FULL service history, the last service was carried out in Feb this year at a cost of £1931 which included new clutch, dual mass flywheel, full engine service inc cam belt and water pump which all sounds like its been a loved car and looked after but I'm worried about the age - 2002, my current car is 2004 but this is a much bigger car and will tow much better than my pug which is why I'm looking at the S60

Service does not include any inspection of the handbrake shoes !!! Assuming it was operating properly for the MOT, the subsequent rapid deterioration should ring alarm bells. Read the threads on the subject and avoid the same fate!
