Default Make an XC90 D5 Euro 6-compliant???

Apologies if this has been addressed in a thread I have missed.

We have a 2010 XC90 D5 SE that suits our family perfectly but since we live in London will become much more expensive to run from 2021 because it is not Euro 6-compliant.

Rather than buy a new car I would prefer to clean up our existing one. Does anyone know of a way of making it Euro 6-compliant? Are there any retrofit kits that will do the trick, or any other ways of achieving the required result?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice.

You may make it as clean as you want, but its what the car was designated at manufacture, i.e. what the V5 states, that is taken account of.
You'd have to alter the whole car radically enough to become a new vehicle, get it approved for road use, and then spend thousands applying for and getting certified for the emmisions 'euro' category.

Thanks, Andy. Sounds logical, unfortunately.

That looks an interesting kit…. But what’s the price? Also how do you get the log book changed - surely it needs to be tested somewhere?

Look like the retrofit SCR kit for Euro5 engines has the ULEZ approval and they register it with Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA)

Looks like it's "just" an AdBlu addition to the exhaust system, with a "special" section to do the magic.

This is a snippet from the Energy Savings Trust web page, linked by Skipjack

"Due to the cost of a retrofit exhaust after-treatment system and the complexity to fit within passenger vehicles, retrofit will most likely be an uneconomically viable option for most vehicle owners. Purchasing a second hand Euro 4 petrol car could be the most economical solution to comply with an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), Clean Air Zone (CAZ) or Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

There is one CVRAS approved solution for the Euro 5 Land Rover Defender model years 2012-2015. The CVRAS is open to receive applications from retrofit system suppliers as the test protocol and standards are set (the same as for vans), however drivers should be aware that only CVRAS-approved systems will be recognised by local authorities implementing an ULEZ, CAZ or LEZ."

Cheers

Dave
