Default 360 GLT timing belt failure

Hi All,

I have a trusty 1989 Volvo 360 GLT 2ltr inj that has done 160,000m. The cam belt has just failed. Does anyone know if this results in engine damage, and are they difficult to change ?

Any help much apreiciated

Hi Mr FFF

not sure about the contact / damage bit..

but re changing

the best way i found was

remove rad

remove fan/ shroud
remove alternator belts
remove timing covers
back off cam tensioner
remove bottom pully

line all up again use a haines or timing guide

make sure you time correctly, not 180 degrees out!!

fit belt,

turn over by hand to ensue correct fitting timing etc

if at any stage engine stops turning over investigate

if all ok refit removed parts

for future reference

replacement criteria of cambelt

4 years or 48000 miles whichever is sooner

there is a previous post on this issue if you delve around

Thanks Matt,

By the time I saw your reply I had infact fitted a new belt just as you described, but after removing the cam cover to check the valve operation. I'm not sure how old the belt was, but I have done 40k out of the total of 160k. So I quess I was lucky for the cost of a £6:50 belt.
