Echo the comments around getting the tyres changed sooner rather than later.

Whilst the MOT test is a Ministry of Transport process that should be carried out uniformly regardless of the test centre you use, equally if the dealer has serviced the car correctly there shouldn't be any failures from say broken springs, play in ball joints, worn wheel bearings or blown bulbs...

If you drive away from the MOT after a failure in the 'dangerous' category then you face a fine of £2,500 plus 3 points. And that becomes a 6 month ban if you do it a second time.

Johnson's of Shirley wouldn't budge on £54.95 for an MOT. I took it to a Kwikfit for £27.

The car is your property and the dealership cannot prevent you from driving it away.

The point is that it is no more or no less of an offence to drive the car to the MOT test with defects than to drive it away from the MOT test having failed, and if your previous MOT has not expired (or car less than 3 years old) you still have a valid MOT (or don't need one) but your car is not roadworthy.

The other thing to think about is that to incentivise you not to drive the car for many faults if you leave the car at the test centre to be repaired you do not have to pay a fee for the re-test. This is could be more than the price difference between the dealer and a fast fit outlet for the tyres.

As has been said if you know or suspect the tyres are end of life - just do the responsible thing and get them changed - why mess about?
I would just like to correct myself on the above - another member has pointed out that under the new rules that came in during 2018 it is now a specific offence to drive a car away from an MOT where is has failed with faults categorised as "Dangerous" under any circumstances. Apologies if I mislead anyone.

The MOT test regime is harsh - zero tolerance of of worn tyres. If you have 1,6mm of tread across the centre 3/4 of the tyre - that's a pass. If you have 1.59mm - that's a Dangerous defect.

Hence it would be foolish to submit a car for MOT if you think the tyres might not pass...

So all Kwik fits are the same and don't adhere to the MOT rules?

Oh I’m sure there are some excellent technicians that work for Kwik Fit, but I’ve yet to meet one....
