Default 940 LPT Auto Transmission dip stick stuck

Went to check levels in the auto transmission and pulled the dip stick out.
I then wiped the marker area, put it back in and went to pull it out again.
It wouldn't come out beyond about 9" of travel and then got really stuck and won't come out any further.
Have pushed it back in and it seems loose for the first few inches of travel, but then that's it.
Any bright ideas what on earth has happened and how to remedy please?

Andy

I don't know for sure, but the dip-stick's measuring element may not be square/round in cross-section, but rectangular/oval, so will only go in to the tube in either of 2 orientations.

If you can rotate the metal part - not the plastic grab-handle bit - it may either come out or fall fully into place.

Failing that, you will need to get under the car and remove the dipstick/filler tube nut and dismantle the unit.

Loki, Thanks for the reply & you're right, the "element" is rectangular/oval.
A bit of manipulation with a torch to see by and it came out sweet as a nut.

Somehow I'd managed to put a slight (& it was slight) twist in the metal and I guess that's what put the element out of alignment.

All sorted now.

PS. Loki is the name of a friend's Doberman - maybe I'll ask him next time :-)

You might get more sense out of the dog than from me!

Dobermanns don't know anything about cars - you'd really need a Rottweiler or a horse - but it has to be a brown horse as the white horses know nothing about cars!

PS - the brown and white horse reference comes from a joke about a driver who broke down and the horse advised him, told the tale when he got to the pub and was asked what colour the horse was - brown he replied. The barman said that's a relief, the white one knows nothing about cars!
