850 2.0 20V idle
Following on from my recent 'problems'
1. Non-start following 2 short duration starts, garage say compression problem. Tow-started. 2. Oil around dip stick led to my removing Flame Trap. Now have car that starts fine and dosn't have oil around dipstick but stalls if I don't rev engine on 1st start in mornings. If rev engine idle settles at around 800 and car runs fine afterwards. Seen postings about cleaning idle valve or such like. But isn't this more likely to be something amiss with the automatic choke (I presume it has one).... Thanks |

Fuel injected engine don't have a choke.
It enriches the fuel mixture via a computer which responds to air and engine temp. |

Thanks, I actually relaised my mistake, and would have alterered/pulled the posting if I could have done. Thanks for not being 'mocking' in the reply.
Question still stands though. I have engine that idles around 800 rpm when car is warm and is pretty constant. But when initially started, unless I rev the engine for a bit, drops well below 800 and stalls. |

RE: 850 2.0 20V idle
Hi Steve,
idle problems on the 850's are almost always due to either the throttle housing or the idle control valve needing cleaning. They seem to get gummed up over time with oil deposits from the engine breather system. If you do a search for these topics you will find many accounts of these areas and how to go about cleaning them - at least this is something cheap to try first!

No problem, anyone who never mad a mistake never made anything.
By the way if you open any of your own posts you will see on the bottom an edit option,if you click on this you can then alter your post if you want to. |

Indeed - in that it's cheap to try. It's not yet cleared my problem, though. It is an intermittent problem, though - doesn't happen every day. Although I have noticed on the days when it does occur, the car seems to take a bit of cranking to start. |

Bit of a long shot, but if oil spills around the filler cap it can run along the engine top cover and into the electrical components on the side of the engine. Maybe the camshaft position sensor stuff is fouled up? Long shot.

Liu Lei,
I haven't gone back through past threads to see what you've tried, but I suspect just about everything, intermittent problems can be real pains to sort. Have you been able to monitor the fuel pressure over one of these non-starting incidents? If it was low then you wouldn't get a rich enough mixture initially for an engine start until enough unburn fuel had accumulated.
