sussed it! it's not the two torx screws that I expected. I undid the two that go through the holes in your first picture. in fact itst the other pair that need to be undone first!

ok all done. seems to have worked.
previously to get cold air I had to turn temp adjuster all the way down to max cold. now the car definitely adjusts temp of air and airflow speed as the temp dial is set to intermediate settings.

Just a few small points for future fixers:
I disconnected the battery and then with key in ignition turned to position two I moved the gear selector all the way back to gain access.
As said above, make sure you remove the correct two torx screws. The whole central unit lifts out easily with no clips. It is quite heavy!
I unclipped all the cables from the unit to allow me to work on it out of the car. There are no duplicate cable, so no chance of getting conectors mixed up.
The unit you have removed consists of a central frame with the radio unit and central unit sitting inside it.
Undo the four torx bolts (not 3) and then release the four clips (two on each side) to release the radio from the carrier frame. The unit with the climate controls will then separate with no force from the radio bit.

Access to the thermistor is from the rear. Undo all the silver philips screws and unclip the plastic covers to gain access to the circuit board.
Be brave, the circuit board just pulls away, it's a friction fit with no clips.
You are then at the thermistor!
Solder in a new one and reassemble everything in reverse.
Easy really. I love working on Volvos, good quality materials and logically designed to come apart.

First full day report:
Climate control is officially fixed. This is definitely the correct part. I left the temp control con middle settin (22), this morning it started of with little fan, the once the engine was warm it blew slightly warm air to warm the cab up and auto slowed the fan speed after a while. This evening after work the car was red hot inside. aircon kicked in automatically and cooled car down to a nice temp and then slowed fan speed down gradually. Perfect!

I now have a spare sensor. if anyone in Yorkshire wants help with this repair then contact me through the forum.

Don't wish to tempt fate, but the car is now niggle free for the first time!

Getting CCM-007 - Passenger compartment temperature sensor faulty signal DTC

The car is reading the outside temperature ok at around 11 degrees but is reporting that the inside temperature is 25 degrees when it should be around the same, i.e. 11 degrees

Is this a new CCM or is there a fix?

check the sensor that is on the climate control, do not poke anything in, it may be bunged up with fluff, use air or blow in the grill, there is a how to fix i will post later for change just the element .

The fluff wont stop it working , just delay the auto adjustment process a little .. maybe ..
