I want to know your experience and thoughts about chipping 2.0d. Is it worth it? I have read it gains mpg and ease engines work

They also cause your motor to go into limp home mode, some more etc. Keep away from em, they’re a waste of money. If you’re looking to make changes it might be worth approaching a company that does remapping and tell em what you want.

Thanks for info. Maybe dumb question-what’s the difference between chip and remap?

A remap is where the engine computer (ECU) is re-programmed with different parameters to change it's characteristics - usually more power. This can be done safely and reliably and Volvo even offer remaps via Polestar on it's cars. However if you use that power often, you will put more stress on the car (clutch, drivetrain etc.). Some remaps done by less reliable companies can also cause all sorts of problems - RICA and MTE are well regarded on here but not sure if they do one for the 2.0D.

Chipping or tuning boxes are a cheaper option and work by "frigging" the readings from some of the sensors to fool the engine into producing more power. These are generally crap and known to cause all sorts of problems such as limp mode, blocked CAT's and DPF's etc. and are obvious to anyone looking under the bonnet - not that you wouldn't tell your insurer...

The 2.0D is generally regarded as in a nice, well balanced state of tune on leaving the factory and not many people tweak it. If you do - it invariably involves more boost so check carefully hoses, intercooler etc.

not wanting to get into an argument about it but I have had a box on my d5 for 2 years now and approx. 16000 miles, no limp mode, no dpf issues, no gearbox issues only issue was I wore out a set of pads and discs but that was on the list to be done anyway.
I never reset my average mpg either and went from 30mpg to 35mpg (all the dreaded short journeys) in about 4 weeks. then went from Liverpool to loch Tay still without resetting my mpg and had got upto 48 average mpg by the time I got there. I was not hanging about either. funnily enough that's over 2 years without resetting my trip computer

admittedly though the box was supposed to be temporary as it was an expensive piece of kit that I got hold of second hand cheaply.

my new t5 will be remapped.

Re-maps are also detectable, any company that does them and says they can't be detected is not being straight with you.
IMHO it's not worth the risk of carrying out a modification and not telling your insurers, many are quite reasonable now and even have the options listed for online quotes.

used several tuning boxes in the past year and would never touch them again really. One caused over fueling problems on an old car and the other caused limp mode constantly on my previous S40 2.0D under hard throttle.
