Will the sediments (if any) at the bottom of the tank manage to get past the fuel filter and clog up the injectors? if so then running the tank close to vapour is a bad idea.

I have heard in the past that if a fule injected car runs out of gas, its not very good for the car/engine. I don't know why though.

I know that this is re the S40/V50 but out of interest on my S60 D5 the computer shows 49 mg average - true cumulative mpg is 44! The dealer once tried to re-calibrate it, but I don't think they really understood how to do it.

The crud shouldn't get past the fuel filter - but it will become clogged.
It's not as bad these days, many tanks are plastic or anti corrosive unlike the easily correded iron lumps of yester-year.
Still not advisable to run a vehicle down to the last few litres though.
