Locked key in car!
Just had a bad experience.
My wife opened the door of our V50, put the key on the drivers seat (for some strange reason). Put our 13 month old son in his car seat in the back, then shut the rear door to get into the drivers door then bang! Doors lock leaving son stuck inside! Didnt have access to spare key resulting in a quick call to our dealer who informed me that the only quick way to get in was breaking rear passanger door window. Having only had the car 4 weeks I found this very hard to do but needed to get child out safe. Dealer told us this was called passive arming when the car locks itself when no key was put in ignition. Can anyone shed any light on this? Is it possible to turn this feature off? Thanks |

not sure that ive heard or experienced that one, hope your little one was ok, can be very stressfull for a small child.
i would have thought that somewhere in the cars settings or the dip switches or software that the dealer could turn this feature off, you would have to speak to them, but it doesnt sound right to me on a four week old car.

The dealer is right.
1 if you unlock the car but dont open any doors - then the car will reclock after a few mins. 2. If you unlock the car - open a door - but don't put the key in the ignition and then close the doors- then the car will relock after a few mins. I;ve never heard of it re-locking imediately after closing the doors. This function is configurable, as there are actually laws regarding these functions in various countries. Your dealer should be able to change the settings. Personally, I'd leave them on - your now aware of them, and it is usefull. I'd also chase as to why the doors locked immediately on closing them. I don't recall the exact delays between when the doors are closed and they are supposed to lock, but it's not that quick.....or did you wife close the door , and then leave it a few mins? If they did lock immediately - I think that's not the norm, and you may be able to have some comeback with the dealer....dunno though, not 100% on how the passive locking works. vipes.

Yes Vipes is right. They never lock immediately in closing the door. There is a few seconds delay. Can't remember now if its 20 or 30 sec. I like this feature but I know its there.
I have an almost 3 year old 'imp' with me and I have realised that when I have him strapped into the front seat, he has worked out that pressing the lock switch on the passenger door make a nice locking sound and does it all the time. I have to be aware NOT to leave all the doors closed when he is in there and I walk around to the driver side. I tend to always have my driving door ajar before I strap my imp into the front passenger seat. That said, I have volvo On-Call in the V50 so with a phone call, I can have the control centre open my doors if the car gets locked with the keys inside. Nice feature. cheers (picture of Imp attached) |

My manual (MY 2005 car) says auto relocking is activated 2 minutes after unlocking the car if no doors are opened. If doors are opened then auto relocking doesn't happen. I tried it out and that's the way it works on my car so the situation you experienced wouldn't occur with my V50. I would see what it says in your manual.

It does vary , most will definitly re-lock if you don't open the doors - some re-lock when the doors have been opened but the key no placed in the ignition. All models have this feature - just depends which bits are turned off or on - and what the delays are. The manual doesn't cover all the options - just the first.
Not sure about the V70 - but the other favourite for locking the keys in the car is when you only release the boot / hatch...stick ya shopping in or whatever - and you place your keys in the boot out the way whilst you do so then close the boot....and just as you let go, you remember ! ah the keys...noooo too late, locks and re-arms! I've done that once - gladly I was at home and had the spare key!
