I read the codes, I can't remember the number, it said it was a vvt short, open CCTV or cam shaft sensor. That is with the solenoid un plugged. When the solenoid is plugged in I can clear the codes, light goes out and stays out but I get the rough back. This is why I was convinced it was the vvt side of things but the solenoid has 8.5 ohms resistance reading and operates fine when connected to 12v, supply to solenoid is also a good 12v.

My going around in circles is slowly spiralling into despair.

The other thing to note: the timing is not set at TDC. All four pistons are at the half way mark in the cylinders.
Why did you change your vvt pulley, what problem was it causing.

I started the car last week and it had a very pronounced top end tapping noise - never done that before! It sounded like one of the hydraulic tappets had collapsed. Took the oil filler cap off while the engine was running and no difference in sound. Unplugged the VVT solenoid and no difference. Read the codes in VIDA and nothing there, no engine light on the dash. Listened again and thought the noise was coming from the pulley, so decided to change the pulley as I had nothing else to go on. Started the engine after the change and now super silent and much more responsive than before. Re-read the codes and again nothing there.

Surprised the pulley has failed as the car had been serviced to the book by Volvo before I bought it at 90,000mls and since then I have serviced it myself, changing the oil and filter every 7,000mls using Shell Helix oil 5w/40.

I'm pretty sure mine isn't pulley related as it runs quiet. Thanks.

Hi Cogs, I have the cam locking tool for this engine which in the end I didn't use for a recent timing belt change. Yours for £10 if it is of any use. Cheers, Sam
