What I like to do is wait until the fuel gauge light comes on then reset the trip meter, drive to the petrol station and fill up with 10 gallons (45.50 litres), and then wait until the light comes on again. Doing it this way means that the trip meter displays the actual MPG. Eg. 287 miles = 28.7 mpg, 331 miles = 33.1 mpg.

This is on a 940, the older 740's don't have the light but you can still get it pretty accurate by waiting until the needle touches the red bit.

I have to fill mine as my fuel guage has never worked.both on my 740 and 240.Yes I know there are how to's but never seem to get round to it.If only we had an expert at fixing them we could have him set up a fuel gauge clinic at the bkv and charge a small amount to fix them all.Anyone willing and able?.I wouldn't mind spending a tenner to have it fixed. It's just a case of knowing just whats needed and how to get all the dash bits off.

Regards Brian.

Did any 740's get a low fuel warning light or was it only the 940's?

Interesting site for anyone interested in saving fuel/money. A lot of it is common sense, but there are some good tips.

1990,740GLE 2.3L five speed manual,B230F 116hp at 5400rpm.

Quite low horse power in fact only the B200F is lower at 110hp at 5900rpm.

I achieved 25.17 miles per gallon.Above average according to the poll.I'm quite happy as my 240SE 2.0L B200F auto is a real drinker.

I haven't gone on a long run yet just stop start short journeys which isn't ideal but I can't persuade the wifey that the engine needs a good thirty mile run when I'm only nipping down the shops Lol.

The real test will be when I hitch the twin axle twenty one foot caravan on and travel 150miles fully laden.Probably lucky to get 18mpg.
Regards Brian.

Just bringing things up to date.I did tow the twin axle beastie of a caravan to the national BKV a distance of 130 miles.I kept it slow and averaged about 50mph on motorway. The figure I got was 22.21mpg on the way down and 20.18mpg on the way back.I did use A roads on the way back and encountered quite a few hills and roundabouts so stop start. The week before I got 22.3mpg and thats stop start over short distances..The week before that I was driving like a saint and got 28.78mpg.
Amazing how much difference driving styles can make with these gas guzzlers.

Not just a little saving but big savings to be had if you can tolerate the slowness.

I'm quite happy with the results really as the caravan wieghs in at about 1600Kg.
Regards Brian.

My speedo is now fixed and I thought that when it was fixed I was going to log out my mpg and contribute to this thread

However, I've decided that I am going to treat fuel in this 940 2.3 in exactly the same way as I did in my 740 petrol. I am not going to pay too much attention to my mpg, only keeping a rough eye on it to ensure there is not too much wrong engine wise. I had to focus on the positives with the 740, it's practicality and load lugging and it's the same with this 940, I'm not going to think too much about what it costs per mile to run this beast, but I know it's a lot compared to my diesels!
