Hi All
I've recently come across a Deep Purple 164. I can't find the colour on the colour chart. Its a '71 model so I guess it goes with the era. ![]() Anyway, the real question of this thread is as follows... The paint work has faded quite badly and I would like to revive it. Can anyone tell me how to go about doing this? I know it'll need more than a polish, maybe some sort of cutting agent? I'm really not all that clued up, so a "Dummies" guide would really not offend me. Thanks Dylan Last edited by Dylan144GT; Feb 25th, 2009 at 06:47. |

Hi Dylan,
Tempted to join the 164 club then? Is it this colour? ![]() If so that's a standard colour, at least in Europe. May be a different colour range for SA cars? If it's badly faded, you need a fairly aggressive cutting compound. A trade supplier for car bodyshops or detailers is your best source; they will have a range of compounds and will advise. Make sure they know its an old car; they will be able to recommend the right products for whatever paint type it has. Do you have T-cut over there? If so, don't bother with it. No good at all for serious fading. Doing it by hand will be a really serious nightmare. You need to get hold of a buffing machine - even then it's quite hard work. But it really works... have a look at this. http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=84711 Post some pictures!! Cheers John |

Hi Dylan,
So you've got a 164 too? Blimey I'm impressed, good skills sir! I can't say I've ever had owt to do with paintwork and finishing, I tend to T-cut cars when I decide to sell them, and it is a pain, then you've got to do it all over again with polish! I did find with an old VW Polo I had that if it rained for several days then took it through a car wash the oxidised layer came off with the brushes, probably not much use for you in SA. Old cars should look old in my humble opinion! ![]() ![]() Sam |

No, it is not the colour of the car in your pic. It is literally a purple. The car you show is sort of maroonish at least. I took pics of it the other day. Will post them tonight. It doesn't look like it was resprayed. The engine bay is always a give away on a respray and this had no signs of it anywhere unless it was completely stripped which I doubt. But one never knows. That end product of that Beemer is immaculate BTW! Sam No, I don't own it...YET! ![]() ![]() I'm really excited by this project. Obvious due to my research beginning 2 months before I take delivery of the car! ![]() Thanks for the advice on the detailing guys. Will post pics tonight. Dylan |

Well done Dylan! Manual 164 with sports instruments... and possibly in a one-off colour. A car like that could have other options/special features as well. Sounds like a great find. Any plans for it as yet?
Does it have overdrive, fuel injection? I'm looking forward to seeing the photos. (By the way, the first time you punt the 164 around the roll and understeer will alarm you, but don't fret, it's all easily fixed). Cheers John |

Hi John
Sorry, I must admit it was a bout of laziness that delayed posting the photos. I took the pics with a 10.1 mega pixel camera and had to resize them for the forum. Of course this is where the laziness came in. So thanks to your enthusiasm, here they are! Hope you enjoy! ![]() Dylan Last edited by Dylan144GT; Mar 4th, 2009 at 20:24. |

Lucky guy; that's going to be a beauty!
Optional rear head-rests (usually only seen on later 164s) and looks like it had headlight wipers at some time (blanking plates under the lights). Chrome round the headlights (a common accessory) and round the foglights (never see that before). You have the SA front bumper, indicating proving it's a locally built car, although the wipers are LHD pattern. SA built RHD Volvos switched to RHD wiper patterm many years before European RHD (British) cars. I'm interested to see what colour it is under the fading... polish a small area when you can so we can see! When do you collect it? John |
