Well, that was a positively pleasurable and relaxing experience.
New rad in, thermostat replaced whilst I had it apart, new hose clips installed.
4.5l of Carplan's finest blue coolant tipped in, taken for a test drive, heater nice and toasty now and temp gauge slap bang in the middle.

Now it's just a question of letting everything settle overnight and top off with water.

Best bit - I got to teach my 10yo about pretty much every bit of an engine in a "Dad, what does that do?" Q&A. Minor significant Dad moment where we were simultaneously doing up the clamp bolts on the top of the rad housing.

Part of the reason for getting a 940 was being able to work on it myself and teach my son basic mechanics, definitely ticked that box now.

It's all thanks to this forum's help, every time I post I learn.

Good to know that you now have it sorted and with a really hot heater output now and no leaking heater valve.
I had to replace my heater valve a few years ago and was fortunate to be able to obtain a genuine replacement. It was only when I had removed the old valve that I found that the old valve itself was not leaking. The leak was caused by the plastic input pipe having been deformed by someone’s over zealous tightening of the hose clip, so making a seal impossible. One of these days I will exhume the old valve and attempt to remedy the problem somehow.
I recently renewed my stat. and found that the old one had broken so was jammed permanently open, causing very slow warm up.
The suspect viscous fan coupling ( Volvo name it a “slip clutch” ) that I mentioned in your other thread was not seized. I bought one via FRF Swansea (£250.) only to find that the new one felt the same as my old one, so I refitted the old one and put the new one into stock.
Oh, and I would have used Volvo’s own coolant which allegedly never needs replacing unless it’s colour changes and you always top up if required with a 50/50 mix.

Well, there's definitely been some historical heater valve issues as there's some crusting around the pipework inside the car. But all looks good, even after the flush I did this morning, definitely no dampness and definitely fully hot. Belt and braces tomorrow - I'll pop the bike on the back of the car and take it for a long run - that way I can cycle home if there are any issues

If it's an estate, just put the bike in the back, not on the back!

This is a fair point! I've got a fantastic Atera 3-bike tow-ball rack but the estate would easily swallow my road bike with the rear seats up.
When I had the Mondeo I always liked the fact that the rack was worth more than the car, that not quite the case with Val.
