Default D5 163 new exhaust

Anyone had to change a exhaust on a D5 163? If so, best place to get the back box? Cheers

A good new back box that will last years and years and will pass every inspection?
Your Volvo dealer....

A cheap 2nd hand back box with unknown life left in it?
Your local car wreckers...

Thanks, I haven't got main dealer deep pockets... At a guess it will be north of £250 for the back box as that's around the price of a aftermarket item, just wondered if any other XC owner has brought a aftermarket one/eBay one or do most people on these forums just put the cars into the garage when something breaks? There must be XC owners who fix their cars by themselves with aftermarket parts? The particular XC I have is one I have brought at a good price to see if we like it and so far we do, plan is to buy a newer, lower mileage one at some point thus not planning on spending main dealer prices. 👍

Can't say that I've come across a D5 owner needing a back box. They're not even 20 years old so in general, why would they?
I'm sure it's not completely unheard of but I doubt you'll get a mass of views and options from which to choose.

It's come with a horrible aftermarket "bad boy" back box someone has cut and welded on.... From my vast experience of working on cars over the last 20 plus years I would say it's been done because the back box was rotten and the previous owner has opted for a cheaper way of fixing it OR it's because it came from Romford area and they like that loud bass effect sound from the exhaust!

Hi, bit of deja vu here. I have not owned up to it on the forum before as I know we are encouraged to use genuine volvo, but I change my back box early last year. When I had it serviced over a year ago, my indi told me it was blowing from a seam. That being said, it appears it was an observation on the previous two years Mot, but surprised it had not failed then.

I ordered a complete back box and mid section on eBay from Poland. (Came as a kit) Ordered Monday and it arrived Thursday. Total cost £89 inc delivery.

It came with new clamps and rubber mounts, in fact it had extra rubber mounts.

Took my indi an hour to fit and that was on the floor as his ramps were occupied.

If it lasts just a few years then I will be happy ... And it looks /sounds fine..

The back box on my D5 was rotting on the seams badly and had been an advisory on the mot a couple of times so I got a new stainless one at cats2u for £80 plus postage.
I just checked and they don't do one for the 90 so maybe those don't go so often?

Ah John, we must both be on the same page (or because we are from Essex!) it was the exact answer I wanted... But didn't want to ask the question! So, I had found that system on the bay and thought about it, in the same search I've found someone selling a new/second hand one for £45 so I'm tempted at that but by the time I collect it @ 28mpg it'll be cheaper to buy new and delivered to my home! How do's it fit and sound out of interest John? Any chance you could upload a pic of what it looks like fitted? Many thanks
