I didn't know of the yellow marking though. ps; my '73 ES also has a (redblock) B20F. The output is almost identical with that of the '95!

So you are a fan of BOTH B20F engines :-)
I Believe the 95 engine was sorted in the factory hence the good oil consumption , there was a rumour at the time that Volvo fell out with Renault at the time and were getting raw renault units to go in the volvos rather than volvo specification ones ... I worked on many P1800ES cars when new got them running sweet i still have a new throttle cable in a drawer .. and a pair of those stainless steel trim strips along the top of the rear wings . B20E 135 bhp , renault based B20F 120 - the B20F was only fitted in the 145E wasnt it? All the 1800ES i knew had B20E engines same as the 144 GL and 1800E

I imported mine ES in '99 from California. The B20F was only produced for the US market from '72-'75 iirc. It was used in the 1800E&ES and in the 140E series. The B20F was developed to meet the stringend Cal. emmission regulations, it has a lower compression ratio from 8,7:1, the E has 10,5:1. This gave the B20F 124hp instead of 135hp for the E, but those figures are (crankshaft)SAE hp. In (rearwheel) DIN hp it is something like 124 for the B20E and 115 for the F.

In UK the last year of the 1800ES was 1974 model year , last produced at end of 1973 , did they go on longer in USA ?
I remember working on a mustard yellow 1971 1800E which early in it's life had overfuleing problems resulting in sump level rising with fuel dilution , anyway that car went like a rocket i remember the rev counter and speedo being well off the end of their scale down the M4 in 1972 :-)

Hi,
I've read before on a previous thread regarding oil consumption on the B20F engines. I have a '92 model with a red dipstick (B18FP) and have noticed that between oil changes i have to pour in about 1L of oil. I was always looking under the engine to see if there was a leak somewhere and was puzzled since it doesn't smoke either. It does have a very small leak from the valve cover on the cambelt side and also leaked regularly from the sump plug (even with a new copper washer, had an oil change a few months ago and the problem solved itself). But it's probably a Renault thing since i've noticed this problem on a few Renaults... Was there something similar regarding oil consumption on the 1.7l engines? |

But all the R engines in the 400 series leak some oil, especially from the sumpplug. Mostly caused by some prev. owner who torqued it to hard.
