I always lock my car in the garage as the systems all shut down and there’s no battery drain.

I think your insurance would be void as well if the car was taken and it was not locked

I wonder if these cars ever shut down completely.

The VoC modem turns off after ~5 days but then switches on once per hour to 'report in'. After ~28 days it switches off completely.
I don't know about the alarm.

Why not lock it in the garage? Where is the disadvantage in that?

My garage is an integral part of my house, directly accessible from inside. I pass by my parked car dozens of times every evening (or weekend day), when I need something from the garage or surrounding rooms. Often I drop in my car bags or something for next day, stuff I do not want to forget to take to work, etc. Or I take something from the car. Having the car unlocked is very convenient for that. Also in the morning I can just send kids to enter the car without me being first there. There are many advantages and only one drawback of receiving once every evening that message from VoC.
And no, I am not afraid of my car being stolen from the garage because it is behind a locked and alarmed door. If someone gets in, I have a bigger problem...

Ah yes, i forget the convenience of an integral garage. Mine is detached from the house, not that it is particularly relevant as it is so jam packed with bikes, fire wood, boat, tools etc... I don't think my car has ever been in there for the 15 years we have owned the house....

Perhaps, if an alarm is present, power consumption may even be bigger when the car is locked.

I have EXACTLY the same situation as you, the same use cases. With two important differences - I have a huge german shepherd living outside and I find the reminder annoying as reminders on my phone means something important is going on. That's because I am a software engineer and devops manager
