Default V70----- petrol or diesel

Hi there, Within the next few weeks, I will be in the position to finally get the car i have wanted for quite some time, a V70. Now, petrol or diesel? I have decided to go for the diesel after talking to a friend who has recently acquired one. I'm not talking brand new but not old either, 3 / 4 years with 30 / 40K ish on the clock. I was wondering what the general thoughts were here regarding the D5's? Look forward to hearing your views. Cheers, Eddie.

I wise choice sir, I don't think you'll regret it.

Have you had a drive in one? Go very nicely.

Loads of discussions on the whole Petrol Vs D5 thing in the S60 - V70 tech forum, here's a link to the most recent.

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=39584

Diesel is well worth it if you do a lot of miles but if not there's nothing much between them except the price.

Good luck, hope you find a good'un. Do plenty of reading on the tech forum first so you know a few things to look for.

I think that used to be the case, now not so sure.
Around here the price between standard unleaded and diesel is zero. Or plus or minus 1p. Obviously can't vouch for the performance petrol brands that you'd pay extra for. In which case diesel will probably be cheaper. However, I'm interested in the new Shell V-Power Diesel.

Another plus for diesels used to be high 100k+ mileage engines. However, modern petrol engines can do that now so again a toss of the coin to decide.

FWIW a plus of the D5 would appear to be the quite high bhp (for a diesel) . That's the reason if I get another Volvo I'll be looking for a D5.

Thanks to you all for your opinions,I appreciate them. I did pose this question at the beginning of the year but things didn't work out for me then. A little more certain now. Cheers, Eddie.

Default Injectors

Before you buy/drive away check the history of the injectors as some models had to have them replaced recently.
Am sure some of the diesel experts will know more.

Smile diesel vs petrol

There is another option, and that is to buy a petrol car and have it converted to LPG. This means you can have a petrol car - smoother, quieter, cheaper and easier to find with lower miles, and better performance than an oil-burner. Conversion to LPG takes a couple of days, costs around £1700, and means that you are greener than diesel!

Pence per mile, LPG costs around 8p, petrol around 15p, diesel maybe 12p.

Payback time is around 20 to 25k miles, petrol vs LPG.

Get it done by an approved dealer and can avoid London congestion charges, and in some cities parking is free!

My 97 V70 has done almost 100K trouble-free miles since LPG conversion. Engine oil stays totally clean, and with the dual fuel tank I have a range of 800+ miles.

The LPG tank goes in the spare wheel well, but hey - it's a Volvo, there's loads of room in the boot! And safety? Well, if you have a bump LPG evaporates fast and won't burn, petrol floats around and will!

Performance suffers slightly, so go for a higher-output petrol engine if you can, plus the plugs need to be changed every 10K. The good news is that LPG runs best on bog-standard cheapest Champion or NGK plugs - none of this fancy multi-electrode stuff!

The Govt has pledged to maintain tax differential between LPG and other fuels.

If you plan to do a big mileage and to keep the car (and why wouldn't you?) go LPG!

Another vote for LPG

Stay well away from a factory fit job.

Eddie

I was in the exact same boat a year ago: looking for a V70 with 30/40k on the clock, and wondering whether to go petrol or diesel. (I received a lot of advice from members of the forum, and there is a lot of really good info posted if you look around). In the end I went for a 2003 D5 SE with 33k miles, and have not regretted it - its a superb car.

Sure, the diesel is a just a tad noisier than a petrol (although not really noticeable inside the car except at idle or under heavy acceleration), but the torque is superb and the MPG has never dipped below 42 (despite the car spending a lot more time in London traffic than I'd originally envisaged: after 10,000 miles in the past year, my average speed is barely over 20mph, so by my reckoning getting 42MPG on that is pretty bloody good!).

I went for the 2003 as I had been advised (on this forum) that some of the 2000-2002 D5s might experience injector problems.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Best of luck with your search!

Z

Smile LPG Diesel Petrol

FYI, the LPG kit fitted to my 97 V70 CD 10v auto (see earlier post) is the Tartarini, from the UK importers Autogas 2000 of Thirsk, N Yorks.

Totally reliable kit, brilliant service, would highly recommend.
