Unhappy tyre problem

Hi there

Took my Volvo V50 SE D5 2007 Automatic 115,000 miles for an MOT today, i knew the tyres on the front were boarder line, but when the car went on the ramp to my horror , the inside edges of both front tyres were badly worn down to the point where the wires & canvas were showing.

Looking at the tyres more closely i cant understand why this should be as the wear is uniform across the whole tyre apart from the edges, its as if the wheel is catching the chasis on full lock, but i have checked and it isnt.

The alloys on the car are sakuras with 205/50/17 tyres, luckly i bought a set of other alloys a year ago with near brand new tyres on them, i swiftly changed the alloys over and got the garage to check the tracking.
the tracking was spot on.

So has anyone got any idea how or why this has happened, as i dont want to ruin the new tyres i've just swapped over. Wheel bearing play was also checked and both fine. The tyres were goodyears so cheap brand tyres is not the answer. I dont drive the car hard, please look at the photos for picture evidence. Wot could of caused this?
