Well there’s a little bit of flex in the ribbed sections of the filler pipe I think, from memory.

Mainly though, the access is so limited once the tank and pipe are in the car I have no idea how you’d do the clamp up- I needed pliers to get the clamp squeezed shut enough to get the bolt started and that was off the car with enough space to work etc.

The clamp screw length doesn’t matter, it’s just a m8? Bolt, nothing special. A longer one might be easier to get started.

I used a longer one on mine, much easier to fit

You're right, I dropped the tank again and it became obvious that I couldn't have clamped it in situ.

The bolt ran out of thread as soon as I started to tighten in, but it was obviously because it was not in the right place.
