Default 740 Turbo, which engine oil?

Evening all,

Looking for recommendations for engine oil for a 1990 174k 740 B230FT. Anyone used Amsoil? Like the look of their turbo formula and the 25k/ 1 year change.

Thanks, Simon.

I was advised by my local volvo dealer to use a 5w/40 semi synthetic oil, as it's a god "average range" oil suitable for most climates.
5w/30 can be a bit too thin when it gets hot.

Kindly remember that the "handbook" is produced as a "general guide" and not for any specific country so to speak, thats why its always advisable to check with a dealer to confirm what they use, afterall, they are in communication with the factory and get better updates on whats best, not whats cheapest.

Thanks. TBH more looking for recommendations on brand as having had a company vehicle for a while I'm not sure who is any good.
I had been looking at Amsoil but it's not cheap and wondered on other's thoughts.

sorry, didnt mean to cause offense. i did my work ex in a garage last month, and we did a service on one then. 10w40 was what the book said for UK temperatures. however, it said 10w40 for almost everthing that week! dont know much about brands, so cant really help there. sorry.

Richard

i should say, where i say "the book" i mean the big book of all engines for all makes that they have in the garage!

Yes,on the manual and on warmer weather that would be my usual advice.

Because you“re on UK,maybe 5W40 would be better in my opinion.

For reference, 5w/40 Fully synthetic oil is £9 for 2 litres in Asda !, making a service only £18 for fully syhth? and its actually shell oil in their own can. halfrauds want £49 for Mobil in its own branded can.
