Start....stop - TDI owners
Hi all,
I have a 1999 V70 2.5D....sometimes when I start it from cold it starts fine and then just cuts out!? A friend have the same issue with his and says his uncle has same issue as well! Has anyone had this happen and got to the bottom of the issue? Not that it really effects the driving of the car it just embarrassing if you have an audience! Thanks.

I had the same issue with my tdi/2.5d.
The cause is the ignition key sensor/halo. Readily available from Volvo at about £35ish. Takes about 20 mins to swap out. I'll have the part number somewhere too. A fairly common failure among all p80 x70s. I believe I read that if you start/try to start the car within 10seconds of unlocking it the ecu wont check is the right key? So if it's being awkward, lock the car whilst sat in the seat, then unlock it and try to start it. It worked on mine when I had to! Hope that helps Ben edit: Part number - 9442961 - this is for 1998-2000 cars, there may be a different part for earlier ones... Last edited by pyro; Jul 13th, 2021 at 20:16. |

Hi Ben,
I would of never thought about that as an issue that would effect the starting of the car .....especially a diesel. Thanks for replying and also supplying the part number as well.......I will report back once I've fitted the new part. Regards, Brian.

Yup that's the usual crap that gets spouted on here... Another great one is all Autobox faults are Pnp switch...If people only knew what that switch actually does they would soon realise they are actually talking complete and utter bollox.

Sounds like immobiliser antenna ring to me too (that's the "halo" ring referred to in pyro's post).
However, before replacing it, a very common fault on these is simply poor contacts in the plug - try cleaning all the contacts very thoroughly first, there's a good chance this will cure it. Nothing to lose, and if it works it's pretty much a free fix!

Did you replace it or just clean the contacts?

I replaced the item....they are £50 on Ebay.
Looking at the item after taking it apart.....all they are is a coil of copper wire soldered onto 2 pins. I dare say one could rewind, solder and use good contact cleaner and save a few quid. I might experiment with faulty one and give feedback.
