Default Mystery part under rear seat

Hi all

What are these foil packs stapled to the foam backed backing under the rear seat (1998 V70)?

The packs each contain a kind of perforated sponge and the bodywork under the packs was wet with a reddish liquid which looked a bit like ATF or red antifreeze.

I have removed the packs and wiped up the liquid.

But I am curious about what the purpose of these was.

Any ideas?

Steve

all jokes aside, its the heated rear seats that was a very rare option. I think most cars have it under the seat, but usually no switch or wiring to it!

Wow if that's the case it doesn't look particularly effective, unless that is the protection to the elements within the seat base? Any more photos, or evidence of wiring etc?

Nice upgrade to have for those in the rear

I don't think it's a heater pad at all..I've just looked at one in mine and Id say it's a sound deadning device of some sort.
The heater elements sit in the seat bases normally.

Definitely no wiring at all.

Yes I would guess that it is sound deadening.

Maybe someone had simply spilled a soft drink years ago, and it was just soaked in that.

I think every 1998/1999 V70 has the same packs. Also just looked in my 1999 C70 convertible, and it has the same.
