V90 B4 petrol or diesel
I am looking at getting a year old so early 2022 V90
Today I had a test drive in a B4 petrol version and was very impressed But I am trying to decide if I should go for the petrol or diesel B4 My annual mileage is around 13k What are people’s experience of economy for both the petrol and the diesel? |

If it's any help my previous diesel V90 D4 did about 48 on mainly motorway, and the T6 Recharge I have now does about 37 on purely petrol on same journeys.

If many short journeys consider the petrol, if any towing involved the diesel may be better (but not great on short journeys).

Are you intending to tow at all? If so then diesel may be better due to low down torque. If short journeys involved then maybe diesel a better option.

Thanks for your replies. So this would be my only car so will do some short runs. That’s probably 3k of the overall 13k. The other 10k is a split of 80 mile journeys and 200-250mile journeys

And for short runs, I walk or cycle as much as possible, only use the car if I have no other option. |

What sort of economy do you get on those journeys?

just drove between York and Hertfordshire yesterday. (430mile round trip)
going up on A roads 43.9mpg return from M1 49.3 mpg Average speed 60/65mph start stop traffic, commuting to london during rush hour around m25 is mostly around 35-43mpg. If I drive to local market a mile down the road, its very bad. engine won't even get warm enough so it burns like 11/15mpg. Not good for the engine, not worth it. This is XC60 so couple of hundred kgs heavier and its a B5 (235hp) mild hybrid. you might get better numbers if everything else is same on v60/90 Last edited by Sahohas; Mar 5th, 2023 at 19:14. |

I have a V60 so admittedly smaller, but hammering it from Scotland to south Devon, a quite regular run I do of 480 miles approx, I average 52mpg. That's with the limiter set to 75mph all the way, because the thing overreads and that's 71/72 on the GPS.
This is on a D4. Supposedly a mild hybrid is SLIGHTLY more efficient, but my understanding of how they work is that it's minimal at speed and more to do with a smoother take off when the stop/start cuts in and possibly a little boost under acceleration. I would expect a V90 to be a little worse but not much - it's just a bit longer after all, not a vastly different car otherwise, and I got very similar results with the D3 V70 I had before it.
