The diesel thing is difficult. We need to see the reaction to the rise in pollution levels it will cause.

In a real world test the BBC commissioned the emission levels cheating VW diesel had just a third of the NOx of a similar sized petrol car in town, and just half on the motorway.

We don't have the infrastructure for electricity production to supply enough power for an electric car takeover, unlike Sweden.

In addition, we need a better battery technology for longer range and quicker recharging. This would have all sorts of other benefits (the ability to store solar and wind for when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow). There are a number of possibilities in the works, but, as I understand it, only in the experimental stage. There is also the hydrogen fuel cell, but again the supporting infrastructure is lacking, and there are environmental costs in producing hydrogen (not to mention the fact that the stuff is a pain to transport and store).
