2012 D5 Sensor alerts - Vida Detective/advice pls
Good Morning, would be interested in the groups views on an issue I have with my 2012 D5 Auto, 112k miles. A few weeks ago an Engine Service Required light appeared on the dash while stuck in traffic. Car continued to drive ok, if a little 'jerky' at times and slightly down on power. Codes have been read and reset but struggling to identify the issue.
The behavior is intermittent. The engine feels jerky at low speed around 1600rpm on light throttle particularly when lightly accelerating from standstill (circa 25mph) Occasionally you put your foot down and nothing happens (no kick down or power) then it works fine 30 secs later. Yesterday my wife was driving up a hill (40mph zone) and the car slowed to 25mph with no power. Yet drove fine when stop/started. Turbo pipes, seals and swirl arm checked by garage and all intact. I also believe that I can hear occasionally another noise (humming?) from the engine when accelerating. The car has been in the garage near where I work (Volvo specialist outside Preston). They want to find the root cause rather than replace every sensor. The attached VIDA sheets show the various errors that are being generated. They changed the boost pressure sensor as per Volvo guide, but no improvement and the root cause remains elusive. She goes back in next week for more diagnosis. In the meantime, can you think of any ideas or further tests that would help narrow down the issue? Many thanks and all ideas gratefully received. cheers Nick |

For the transmission TMC to ECM error: remove and clean ECM connector and TCM connector with contact cleaner spray and refit. Ensure thoroughly clean of course. If you have any corrosion issues you need to deal with them
As for the rest of the inlet side: do a smoke test and look for leaks And for the CCM, that has nothing to do with engine so ignore it for the time being

Thanks, maybe this is progress...the intermittent nature has stopped and its now in low power mode all the time!
A new alert this morning Soot Filter full..... The car is used on the motorway on 200mile trips most weeks. Unfortunately, I now cant drive it back to the Preston Mechanic. Are there recommendations for Volvo specialists on the Wirral? Does the spot filter full message make sense based on the previous vida codes? |

An air leak in the intake system will cause air/fuel mixture to be wrong, which can result in too much fuel being injected, which results in much more soot being produced. The higher that expected soot clogs up the DPF much much faster with the end results that you have experienced. Keep looking through the entire intake system for charged air leaks. One DIY system is to pressurise the charged air side with air and look / listen for leaks. But you can only really do this at the intercooler inlet. However the most common places for air leaks are the turbo to resonator seal, the resonator to charged air pipe seal, and the intercooler itself. So a smoke test may be a better and easier test to do. Also look for splits and cracks in the charged air pipe. The MAF sensor signal-too-low error will be a direct result of the air leak. For the injector on cylinder 2, and the heated oxygen sensor, the first step is clean the connectors. I had similar random misfire errors and signal implausible on my D5 which disappeared after cleaning the electrical connectors and they have never reappeared since (over 4 months now). (The oxygen sensor signal-too-low may possibly be a result of the charged air leak as well) The cleaning of connectors and clearing of errors and checking if the return is very easy to do when you have a VIDA installation of your own. If you are relying on a garage to do it for you then you will have to take the vehicle to the garage. Although cleaning of connectors is literally very easy to do. And if you do one injector, you should do them all. Clean them from dust and dirt with a damp rag so that the dust/weather seal fits cleanly, and then clean the electrical contacts with electrical contact cleaner (available from a hardware store or an electronics shop). Spray both plug and socket and then mate the connectors a few times while the cleaning fluid is still wet to ensure it is rubbed over the mating surfaces.

I would say confidently, you have an air leak thats causing your DPF full message.
As wise says, the most common area is the resonator seals. They need taking off to check, not just a visual eye check. There are posts on here using a replacement silicone pipe instead of using the problematic seals. |

Rather concerning that the garage did not pick up the root cause at the very first diagnosis.
But good it is sorted.
