Damaged front suspension cross member
Hello everybody,
Today I made a nasty discovery, after thoroughly cleaning the cross member, discovered a very shoddy repair on the fork attachment point. I believe that this was probably made with the part in place by a not too good welder, thus the results. I don't believe that buying a new part is possible and/or affordable, so the question is: correcting the repair will need heating the part up, how will this affect the part overall strength? Is there a publish procedure to achieve these repair? Please see pictures attached Thank you Andres |

Don't need heatinge up the part.
Correct it in cold condition. I would remove the L - shaped part, it is cracked and welded badly, and build a new one. With a simple "jig" I would check hight and angle compared to the other side. Have a nice day, Kay |

It took me a while to work out what these holes were for as the cross member is upside down. The parts book isn't very helpful. As said, best to make up a suitable plate, one that matches its opposite number on the other side, and dovetail it in. You can use the lower suspension arm and its clamps as a jig but you'll need some straight edges and a couple of spirit levels to match it up to the other side. Measure the positions of the ends of the spindles to get them parallel to each other. Tack weld the plate in to fix its position, remove the arm and then complete the welding. It may not end up looking exactly factory but neat, strong and accurate should be the aim.
I found a good picture here to confirm what things looked like. https://www.canadianrodder.com/forum...6&postcount=16 |
