Default Clutch cable woes

Hi all. Had a bad week for breakdowns. My work van refused to start during the week and had to be left on site and recovered the next day. Decided to use the Amazon for duties for a couple of days. What better classic to use? Anyhow, 2 days after the van breakdown the Amazon's clutch cable decided to snap heading up a busy hill. Recovered for the second time in two days. First time the car let me down actually. Anyway ordering a new cable from Brookhouse today along with a few other items. My question, is it a good idea to lubricate this cable? If so, what would a recommended lube for this be? Ta.
Hugh.

Always a good idea to lub' any moving parts but your new cable should already be lubricated from factory

Didn't realise that. Thanks Arcturus.

Alf;

I agree with Arcturus...the factory makes lots of cables, so they probably put in the minimum lube in order to maximize their usage (or maybe none at all...after all they are in the business of selling cables...!)...its a cheap and easy improvement for us to make it more than how we receive it...I'd use graphite grease, thinned out with spirits and poured in..when spirits evap away, they will leave cable well lubed, and probably never wanting for more...

Cheers

I’m guessing your cable broke because it was old (1 decade? 2 decades?), not because it wasn’t adequately lubricated.

Assigning a nefarious motive to the manufacturer’s (not Volvo) initial lubricant quantity or quality seems unfounded, and contrary to my experience.
Intended in jest, I suspect...

I would not put any spirits into a new pre-lubricated cable, nor do I think graphite in any form is necessary or beneficial.

Best

I agree with the above. If any thing a Teflon based lubricant would be my choice. Also make sure there are no sharp bends in the cable. They would be a potential wear and breaking point.

nNH;

I'm sure it isn't intentional nefariousness on the manufacture's part, but man's "nefarious" is another's "cost reduced"...my comment was meant half in jest, half in earnest...I expect there is some lube in there (I would certainly hope so, as it would be, IMO the proper way to manufacture and store/distribute these cables)...on the other hand, I'm sure they don't put in as much as I would, being of the position in this case, that more lube is better...I would say its impossible to overlube, and I would kindof like to put the cable in a position of lasting beyond those 2 decades...

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback everyone. New cable coming this week, hopefully, so I can get the old girl back on the road!

I use teflon loaded lubes meant for cycle chains , does not drip , will not affect the nylon liner & leaves you with a very smooth feeling pedal action
