I will only buy manuals.
MY10 xc70 2wd D5 2.4 6 speed manual box and seriously once moving hardly ever need the lower 3 gears even when towing. Change the gearbox oil every 40k to keep it fresh. Currently on 76k . Previous tdi V70 5 speed manual on 225k, again I changed oil every 40k when in my ownership but had 105k on it when I baught it. Neighbour whom baught it off me says it's still fine with no undue noises and smooth as silk.

Good, glad I could help, thanks for taking my time, thanks for asking a stupid question, not responding to anyone. I suggest you buy a 1.6DriveE as that's a diesel.

In the hope of a response(!):
In 2008 I had a new V70 2.4D SE Lux manual (not D5)
It was my first Volvo and I loved it!
It certainly gave me a good enough impression of Volvos to last this long.
But it wasn’t until after it went back and was replaced by a 2011 XC70 D5 Lux, also manual, that I realised how lacking the 2.4 was.
The D5 with twin turbo was not only a lot quicker but also more economical - closer to 40 mpg ave. (often more) instead of low-mid 30s with the 2.4D.
Both manuals, both had 4C, so a pretty direct comparison - even the slight height increase did not compromise handling - and I found it more practical.
Obviously V70s were, and still are, cheaper than XCs

My 2.4d (163) manual was superb, average mpg over 3 years was 44. Have just switched to a 2.4d with the 173 d5 engine but geartronic, only done a few hundred miles but it has more torque, most noticeable in mid range acceleration. Mpg so far around 42 but as I said only done a few hundred miles...

I also have the 2.4d with the 175 D5 single turbo engine, polestarred to 195 and 460 Nm torque. High 30s low 40s depending on how much towing I do, running light on motorway have seen 57mpg average but that is a rarely as I normally carry a lot of useful junk.

If you want frugal you do not buy a 2.4 litre 2 ton barge but for a 2.4 litre 2 ton barge they are very reasonable on fuel consumption and Excel on comfort and driveability.

I don’t think you can over stress the comfort the big Volvos offer. If you do a lot of miles you generally need to arrive fit and well and able to enjoy your weekend away or ride your bike ,meet your customer without being bent double.
For a large car offering the safety it does I think the MPG is terrific and would not expect more of any car. We have the twin turbo XC estate and it’s so comfortable on long trips for my wife and I and also for our three dogs in the huge boot.
Comfort it seems has now been ranked behind economy in the sales stakes.

This comment struck a chord with me. We regularly travel a 4 hour plus journey from home to Cornwall in our V70 (D3) and I am always impressed by how effortless the journey seems to be. Quiet, comfortable and with the cruise control enabled and radio on, an absolute pleasure to drive. Ok, advert over
