Default Ac not working radiator fan contantly on.

Hello all,

I am hoping someone can help
55 plate v70 t5.

Air con failed today, sounded like a hissing from behind the centre vents.

Compressor was still kicking in when ac button operated.

Now, the compressor does not seem to be operating and the engines radiator fan is operating constantly even when the car is cold.

Has anyone got any ideas? Are the ac and cooling fan related or seperate issues?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

the engine ecu works the AC Compressor , if it has a signal that the gas has been lost it will run the fan for safety in case it is a false alarm .

Many thanks for that.
Is the any way of stopping the fan? I cant be good for its longevity being on constantly?

Do you know if the leak is likely to be inside the dash area Where the hissing was or might it be somewhere (cheaper) and the hiss be a low level of refrigerant being pushed around the system?

Thanks,

Andy

When you fix the AC the fan will behave .. Best get the AC guys to diagnose it .. I assume the fan turns off shortly after you turn the ignition off .. No problem with the reliability of the fan , it is first class heavy duty design ...
have you tried turning the AC off ?

Update.

Looking around thd car, there is a lot of green oil / dye around the hoses that attach into the compressor.

I am assuming this is likely to be the source of the leak.

Anyone know if this is an easy fix, and a symptom of the joint / hose and not an issue with the compressor?

Thanks

If you can, tighten up any hoses/connections (to attempt to prevent any further loss of refrigerant to the atmosphere), then make your way to you local, friendly, vfm A/C specialist for investigation and repair.

Could simply be loose connections or split hose, but could be worse....

Don't touch any connections.
It indicates that the ECU doesn't get a safe reading from the pressure sensor.
If it was simply the lost gas, the diagnostic test that ECU does on engine startup (compressor trigger) would indicate safe pressure conditions and no cooling fan would be triggered.
So I would rather think a pressure sensor problem, first I would check the connection to the pressure sensor.
If still fan on then get a reading from the pressure sensor and compare to normal readings.

The dye is to help leak tracing . You really need to get this to a qualified AC repairer or the volvo dealer who will be more able to locate the exact part you need . Don't touch anything as it may be a cracked pipe which could suddenly snap off and spray you with the remainder of the liquid gas . This can cause frostbite . It is illegal to tamper with AC systems since september 2010 for this very reason and you have to hold a qualification to even work on the AC systems .

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

It looks to me like a leak in the hose / seal that joins the compressor.

I will get it booked in for a specialist to look at.

Hopefully not too expensive!.

Only had the air con serviced a month ago. So frustrating.
