I still haven't decided what my Virgos should look like ... I just cleaned them up and painted the inner lines black.

I enjoyed reading the replies. We are in good company.

Finally, there are wheels...

The next job is to replace wheel bearings. I started it earlier this afternoon. Oh dear!

Wheels are looking good!

Which type of wheel bearings have you got? If it's the sort that are integral with the hub, they're usually pretty quick and simple to change, the older sort i'm not so sure about but shouldn't be too bad if they shift as they should.

The best or only way to refurbish wheels is to buy them from someone who has already done a sensible diligent conservative job .... see the result before spending your money .... and .... enjoy.


I have two sets of wheels. Both bought from forum members who simply looked after them. Cushti.

And then you can change your mind what wheels you want, or decide you have over restored them and they no longer suit the car, or howl when a wheel gets unavoidably kerbed after all that work, or ....

Captain's log,... now where did I put my pen?

Wheel bearings are the old style with inner and outer races to tap away at and magic grease required for assembly. So far, the tapping bit is going well but Captain forgot to order greases. So the assembly bit will come after Easter.

Apparently red line stuff is desirable so it's getting a tub of their CV2. Hopefully adequate for an ambling 240. Fingers crossed it will soon be at large in the wild again.

By inner and outer races to tap away at, do you mean removing the bearing then drifting out the old races and drifting in the replacements?
When I had my Marina, which had taper front wheel bearings, another Marina enthusiast advised the following:
Once the old race is out of the hub, cut through it with an angle grinder and use it to drift the new race in. It’s the exact size but will not jam in the hub because of the cut out. It worked well for me on a number of occasions.

Did the new bearings not come with grease? They usually do (unless they're sealed) very often a small sachet that might easily be tucked under a flap in the box or similar.

Usually a woefully inadequate amount as well, it might be the right amount when the sachet is filled but you can never get out all that was put in!
