Default Older Volvo parts availability

I've always used genuine Volvo spares for my 1996 960 3Ltr 24v. Today I phoned my Volvo dealer to order a few service bits from them. They tell me that the air filter element for my car now comes up on the system as 'part expired' - ie, Volvo no longer produce them. I can understand car manufacturers phasing out non-service components, but I would expect common service spares such as filter elements to be available long-term.

Can anyone recommend a good quality alternative air filter element supplier?

Stan.

I know with my xc90 (modern so not the same) the Volvo oil filter genuine is made by Mann filters (stamp present on unit).

I would try a Mann product as they are proper filtration design company, I would also use fram. Crossland and bosh don’t produce their own filters. I would not use a crossland product myself.

If you have a look on ebay there are some volvo air filters, also a Febi, which is a good make, or there's always K/N which are pricey, but can be cleaned reoiled and reused.

Did they try volvo classic parts warehouse in Sweden? that should have been their next step , they do try to stock parts which could take the car off the road ...

Mahle filters, or Mann.
Both top quality, and both make/made volvo oe filters.
Mahle make a big thing about how their filters are constructed properly so as to perform and protect properly, as good as or better than oe.
Stay away from Fram, they purport to be the best but lots of independant tests have found them to be woeful at best, screw-on canister filters in particular as you can't see inside, they can have less than half the filter media, folded poorly, very flimsy not really fit for purpose bypass valves, etc. I was shocked when I saw the cut-away filters in various tests, on par with cheap chinese rubbish.

Many thanks, all, for your responses - that's been very helpful. My local independent garage deals with Mann Hummel, so I will probably just go with him.

Thanks again . . . . .

Another vote for Mann Filters.

I was using OEM Volvo filter on my daily C70. But since car parts for less have regular discounts, I got a whole bag of Mann filers (knowing they are a premium filter as mentioned by others) for less than the cost of Volvo's OEM air filter alone. Car runs sweet as it always has.

Default Hi end filter.

Or, you you want to treat your car, and pick out even more particles from you oil, try Royal Purple. They also make some expensive oils!

Very expensive, and, amongst its peers, rather lacklustre.
(The general consensus of oil nerds/chemists and engine folk, who know their onions and do used oil analysis like everyday folk brush their teeth)
