So all things being equal it is wise to choose a lower dB tyre. Because if less noise, then less noise.
Nobody has debated what is being measured, you've contrived to have that argument amongst yourself. BTW all the rather silly asides are just that. |

Look, Im just passing on info from those within the tyre industry.
Im not wrong, as it isnt me who is saying it, im merely handing over information from those who actually know, in order to try and help people. The tyre labelling is external drive-by noise, that, and that alone. It -may- or -may not- relate to interior noise experienced by those travelling within the vehicle. What im saying, personally, is, dont get hung-up on tyre noise labelling when it comes to cabin noise, as it may not be at all relevant. Consult reviews, both press and consumer. A good place is tyrereviews.co.uk which has both available. |

Tbh, if you want any further info, or wish to get info from a more direct source, try Jonathan at tyrereviews.co.uk, he is in direct contact with various people at different tyre manufacturers. If Michelin/Goodyear/Continental etc aren't credible enough, then Im at a loss!
Yes, he is in touch with these people. Ive met Jamie McWhir, Michelins head of UK r&d, at Michelins MIRA facility when I collected a van load of tyres on behalf of Jonathan, there is no BS involved! (I even had a p1ss in michelins fancy corporate toilets don't'cha know! Lol!) |

this is the point at which I move on however based on my knowledge of noise and vibration I do not believe you have been informed of these facts by anyone within the tyre industry.

Let's illustrate.
Here is car 1. It's a luxury car, and really good at reducing nvh. Here is car 2. It's a regular car, and allows more nvh into the cabin. Here is tyre a. Rated at 72 dB. Here is tyre b. Rated at 69 dB. Tyre b is noticeably quieter than a, because of the way the scale works. It produces less noise. There is therefore less noise at source to be transferred into the cabin in the first place for both cars. In both cars tyre b will be quieter than a from the driver's perspective. Because less noise to start with. However because car 2 is less insulative, it will be noisier inside than car 1 for either given tyre. |

Im about to cry....
Ffs, yes and no chaps! I will repeat, my info is being handed over via a very trustworthy middle-man, from the big tyre manufacturers. THE NOISE RATINGS ARE FOR EXTERNAL NOISE -ONLY-!!!! Im getting a bit p1ssed off now as I have consumed wine, I was just trying to help people potentially not waste their money based on the farcical tyre labelling, as it does not directly relate to cabin noise. I have been totally honest and transparent in stating numerous times that this is relayed info, not my own. Night chaps, Andy. |

It is true that it refers to external noise, the effects internally, who knows. I enjoyed reading your oil thread and found it informative. Best Regards mate. |
