Default S40 D5 Fluctuating px value

I bought my S40 back in October last year for £6800. It's a D5 Auto SE Lux and only had 39k on the clock, so, a relatively rare find I suppose, mileage wise.

Anyway, I'm always window shopping for cars and with my registration number permanently plugged into the Autotrader app, it gives me a px value against any car I look at. For a long time it read £5500, which was fine by me, but then all of a sudden a few months back it dropped to £3k

I spoke to one dealer who told me had two prices for my car on two different systems, something he'd never seen before in 20yrs trading. Problem was he said, the only othe comparable cars for sale had been to the moon and back.

Anyway, still got the old girl and just the other day the px value on AT popped back up to £5050.

What's that all about? Anyone seen this before? I wonder if it was a glitch in the valuation system or something to do with demand maybe? Just interested to know.

As I understand it they use an average of sale prices from across the net etc., if the car is not so common, either model, spec or mileage, or it's just a quirkily quiet week for that model then there will be less cars to average and one car which sells for significantly outside of the normal range will have a big effect. eg 99 cars sell for £1000 and one sells for £500 = average price £995, 2 cars sell for £1000 and one for £500 = average price £833, wow why has my car dropped by £162 in a week?? Similarly if one valuation system monitors sites A, B and C and the other monitors sites A, B and D if the odd value sale is on either site C or D it will warp one value and not the other. Equally it may just be someone entered the data a bit wrong and it all went weird.

Interesting Dave, average sale value certainly makes sense. I see there's a few S40 D5's for sale on Autotrader at higher prices than the ones I'd previously seen, so I wonder if ASKING price has any influence. Certainly sounds more flexible than I had previously believed.
