Default FREE MOT's !

I've just read this:

https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/...-Halfords.html

Basically, Halfords are running a promotion. If you buy anything - even a 99p air freshener - you get a free MOT.

The promo only runs until October 14th but once you make a purchase you can claim the free MOT anytime during the next 13 months.

Call me a cynic but I'm always happy to pay for an MOT from a garage that I trust.
A free MOT has to be paid from somewhere and I can't help thinking that the grey area of "advisories" is where the garage makes the payback.

And now they can do the dangerous to drive category that makes it hard to even take it anywhere else for repair. As the old saying goes, if it seems to good to be true it probably is.

I used Halfords and Kwik-fit cheap deals for 5 MOTs in a row and it never passed problem free.
I then used my local independent and paid the full (£50?) price and it passed without advisories.
Only anecdotal I know but I'll stick with the independent in future.

What they all said! ^^
The thought is very much appreciated though Im sure!

Halfrauds etc have very very bad reputation for fictional issues.
My brother in law is still waiting 5 years later for his exhaust with a 'hole' and 'serious corrosion' to actually blow and fall off after he had to argue with the manager that there was no grounds for a fail/evidence of a leak and get it downgraded to advisory (before they put details in dvla system).

Wise words, fellas.

If you drive cars like ours - i.e. old with plenty of wearing out bits - I can see how things could pan out...

To be fair I try to keep an eye on things and replace bits before they wear too far. However some garages might make assumptions based on age and mileage.

I was chuffed that my MOT man said, on emerging from his pit, that my 2007 160k 2.4 petrol was the tidiest he'd ever seen at that age (I had just replaced the front control arm bushes the day before)

my mot man said the same when I got my 2002 s60 d5, 5 years ago when I was in the pit looking with him, would Halfords and Kwik-fit let you do this ?

To be fair I'm pretty sure that there's a VOSA regulation supposed to prevent that!

However I've done the same

I have spoken very cleary with the werkers at places like Hfrauds, telling me its not safe in the werksop etc. Simply - if its not safe for me then its not safe for you either. Do I have to phone the HSE / factory inspector / council env health / police / ambulance.
To be fair usually a word with the inspector suffices, along lines of - its my car I'd like you to show me whatever you find so that I know what to fix. Talking to anybody else a waste of time, they dont pass it on, some seem so lacking in grey matter they may not understand what they are being told.
