Newbie and brake question
heya guys, im new here but not new to volvos (always had atleast one volvo in the household since i was born)
ive just bought my first volvo personaly a lovely blue 2002 s40 1.9d s. it is a lovely car to poodle about in and serves its purpose as an economical motorway cruzer. there are however one or two gremlins. ive noticed that when i press the brake the brake pedal feels juddery (lumpy) almost like i have a warped disk, if i can put up with the pedal judder should i just leave it alone for the moment and fit all new disks and pads when i can afford it or should i fix it straight away? also the passenger side seatbelt keeps locking up, is there a quick fix for this? thanks in advance people! |

Hi bananabomb and welcome to the forum
1 Brakes...I would get them sorted sooner rather than later. If you think they are juddery just now, imagine what they'll be like when some young child steps out in front of you. 2 Seat belt. make sure the bottom reel is level as these are very sensitive to being at the wrong angle.

front disks + pads clock in at £90 for gen volvo ones.
rears even cheaper. if you have judder at "town speeds" ,,wait till you try putting the brakes on @ 70 on the motorway,,

Hey up,
When I bought my 2001 1.9d it had horrible brake pedal judder. I changed all the discs and all the pads, mintex all round and it was less than £100 of ebay. A few hours of your time, remembering to clean up every surface until it shines, copper ease in all the right places, you'll be trouble free! I'd say that you are looking at swapping the seatbelt. Keeping a sodding good eye on the SRS stuff which is in the pillar with it. But I'd pick up a 2nd hand one off ebay and go for it. Cheers, Daniel. |

thanks for your input guys, the judder isnt to severe (only notice it when im breaking hard) around town (below 30) its barely detectable, i believe its coming from the back of the car so can i just swap out the rear disks? and do the fronts at a later date?
id also like to swap to grooved disks can i do the backs without doing the fronts immediatly? as you may be able to tell im doing this on a poverty budget! thanks scottishvolvo, the bottom reel was the culprit, the seatbelt works fine now! (apologies for posting in the wrong section - newbie mistake) Last edited by Bananabomb; Jan 6th, 2011 at 16:53. Reason: forgot to apologise! and my spelling is poor |

as long as you do left And right at the same time you can do the fronts first, rears first whichever way round you want.
you can get grooved disks, non volvo ones, but in all honesty the std volvo ones with fresh pads Stop the car nice and stop well. you May find that if you take the brakes appart, clean them all up so they are free of muck , add copperslip where your supposed to, pop the disks off clean all the mating surfaces that you can get away with "just a clean / lube" to get rid of the judder. Pot o copper slip (large) from halfrauds or other motor factors is under £8 . Daniel which disks did you grab? ive got fronts on my list to get to this year (not worn/warped but todo in the list of sorting the money pit) ?

Hey up,
I went for Mintex front discs with matching mintex pads. One of their "brake boxes". I think it was about £65 quid on eBay. Couldn't be happier. If you are doing things on a poverty budget Banana, Grooved discs are probably out. I too thought my judder was from the rear, it wasn't. It was fronts all over. From what I can gather, warping front disks is common on the V40's. I'll second the advice, these things aren't Ferrari's. A good clean braking system with a good set of discs and pads will stop them extremely well. I'm working on my braking system at the moment, uprated fluid, braided hoses etc. The gain against the cost isn't enough. I found my VW Polo brakes much more positive that the ones in my V40, but it weighs twice as much. The major upgrade is to fit Evo calipers. They are a straight swap and theres a guide around here somewhere. But that's serious money and a serious upgrade. Cheers, Daniel. |

mintex, thankies, being a biker/poser id only ever replaced OEM with brembo stuff before, which frankly is way too much for the s40. gen volvo looked my safest choice, but if your getting good results with mintex stuff, i may do all 4 while im at it
