Default fuel pump/sender unit not working.registering

I was running low (orange light) on fuel - filled the tank right up & the fuel light stayed on & the gauge still read just above the red no change from before I filled her up...

The fuel gauge started to drop as it would as the fuel was getting used - orange light still showing gauge is now completely resting on that little knob thingy - fuel computer just shows "fuel"....

Do I need a new pump/sender unit (2001 S40 TS (turbo)) or is there a way of getting around it so it shows the correct level of fuel...

The thing that got me was that the gauge never changed when I filled it and was still dropping as the fuel was getting used - so is the sender unit naff & need replacing or is it something else...

I've seen the price of new £180 inclusive - so I dont really want to spens out £180 & its not the prob & could'vr got corrected/fixed a lot cheaper...

Cheers

Take the sender/pump unit out of the top of the tank through the inspection hatch under the back seat and it is most likely you will find a broken wire from the sender to the tag on the unit , a simple re solder will make it like new again ..

If you have a phase 2, I have a pump/sender up for grabs...
I purchased it for my phase 1 T4, without knowing the pump was a little different.

But i'd agree, the wires from the sender a very thin and could come off easily.

is it a genuine Volvo - just so I could check the serial number (if you could let me have the SN) to make sure it will fit mine... Only that I nearly got one from ebay but according to Volvo it wasn't the correct version...

If it is compatiable then how much would you be looking for... As would be very interested - getting a bit annoying now as been like this since xmas...

Would I need to disconnect the battery or anything to do this & would I need to de-pressurise the tank or anything.. Or can I just unscrew the pump & pull it out of the tank to check....

It is genuine volvo, it is used, but the T4 it came from had only done about 55,000 miles, so should be good for another 50,000 miles yet.
Mines just given up at 150,000 miles...

To take the pump out, disconnect battery, release fuel pressure, then open hatch under rear seats, then unscrew large black ring (very stiff, I use a 1ft stick of wood & a hammer), then the fuel lines just pull off.

I'll get the serial number for you shortly...
I'd only be after like £30 quid for it, as it's of no use to me being for phase 2.

i completed this job on my T4 just the other day with my wife, i bought a second hand complete unit from this guy Volvo specialist 08447706990 (Mark) cost 50 with delivery, my car was running out of fuel when there was a clear half a tank left. a simple job to complete, unscrew big black cap under rear seats and carpet remove wire connector (easy clip types) remove unit completely, replace with new unit, ensuring big black screw collar is not cross threaded. if you need any advice since its fresh in my head please email me for my phone number deansmith@gmx.com
but as the other post suggests it could simply be a loose or unattached wire they are very delicate
