Post Failed locking wheel nut

The outer edge where the "key" fits has broken off the bolt, fortunately in the drive and not out in the sticks on a dark rainy night.

Dealer has ordered a new set but needs to send the car for drilling out, stated that they have seen quite a few and there is a faulty batch which cannot be traced. Mine has a discoloured crack which I think is probably a manufacturing quench crack.

Strange the only thread on this subject is dated 2003, anyone else had this problem?

I've not had a problem with the locking nut or wheel lugs, but I have been stranded in the middle of nowhere at 3am in the morning with two shredded tyres and unable to get the wheels off as the allow wheel and fused with the hub.
I'd advise you put copper slip on the hub when you eventually get the wheels off.

Default Lost keys on locking wheelnuts

I had this problem - lost key on a locking wheelnut. Stopped at a tyre fitter and asked his advice. He wordlessly hammered a 3/4" drive hex socket onto the smooth barrel of the offending wheel-nut and proceeded to unscrew it. Impressive. Took thirty seconds, cost me a fiver, and saved a shedload of trouble.
Easy.

Yes good advice, experienced the removal problem with the previous S60 so had the dealer put copper slip on pre-delivery. Hence all came off with ease but the failure occurred on tightening the 4th, dealer said they tend to go that way round and the others are likely to fail.

DONT EVEN GO THERE...

I have had endless problems with the locking nut,.. i had to get someone to weld the bolt on to remove the wheels... they where jammed solid. I think the mc gard locking nuts are off a poor design, so i brought some after market ones.

even if you do get a new locking key, there is a chance of it being jammed which will mean problems and damage to your alloy.

Not quite sure who your post was aimed at - but for general consumption I tried very hard to remove the broken bolt, wrecked several sockets and tried a tight ring spanner supplemented with Loctite liquid steel, all to now avail, so it had to go to the dealer for sub-contract drilling out.

The replacement set as the dealer said they would be are different, appear a better quality, even the nut is more substantial and identified as McGARD, so apart from the obvious manufacturing fault in the one that failed the impression is that the originals were from a none standard source.
