As some one who drives an artic for a living I have to say hats off to the driver in the vid. As Marty says smaller trailers are more difficult, if you think of the trailer as a vehicle on it's own, you are steering it using the rear axle of the towing vehicle. On an artic thats relatively simple as you can jack-knife the unit from side to side (like going lock to lock on the steering in a car) without the trailer moving too far, with a car and caravan the effective length of the trailer is shorter and the towing unit longer so it's harder, as a ratio the artic truck trailer to unit is about 3:1, the car and caravan is about 1:1 or less. The wagon and drag in the video has an even greater problem as it has a steering axle on the trailer, so the trailer is steered by a trailer steered by the wagon, reversing one of them is like trying to push a peice of string! the trailer steer axle will fold up in the blink of an eye. The rig in the video must have been built with manouvers like this in mind as most of them have a shorter drawbar which means that as the trailer folds up it smashs the back of the wagon if you try a turn like that, but that takes nothing away from the skill and nerve of the driver inthe video.
Just watched the video again and noticed it's a left hand drive truck, so all the manouvering of the trailer is done on what we call the 'blind side' where the driver can only see what's going on in his mirrors!

Watching the bit at 1;30+ where he knocks the cones over made me think of the HGV test where before you even get on the road you have to do a manouvering test in the yard at the test centre, any cones touched is an instant fail as they represent parked cars or a child stood on the corner, so our biking hero has just mown down a line of kids waiting at the bus stop! There is some poetic justice though, soon after he's so busy looking at the girls legs- he falls off the bike! LOL

Seems like a bit of overkill just to check the tail lights.
Good to see at least two people that know their job. Last edited by happy diver; Feb 18th, 2013 at 10:07. |
