Yet another example of a large manufacturer putting the lives of their customers at risk by not testing their products adequately:

Seems similar to recalls from Volvo then. They seem to mention the word 'fire' in a lot of recalls!!

Is that the engine in the S/V60?

I don't remember these issues happening a lot until the last few years with Ferrari 458s and prototype Saab 9-5s catching fire.

Of course there was my Father's Triumph Stag back in 1971...but that's another story..!

I do recall many years ago, that a certain manufacturer (USA) took the view that it was CHEAPER to let people die (can't remember the exact fault but I'm sure fire risk was involved) and pay any ensuing compensation, rather than make the necessary production changes.!!!!
Not of course suggesting that this will be the case this time..!!!!!

I remember the early BMW Mini models' fuel fillers causing fires somehow.
Anyone remember Ford launching their "Intelligent Protection System" on the 2000 Mondeo, immediately followed by said Mondeos' airbags going off willy-nilly as customers were driving along?!

Is it just co-incidental, that none of the last properly developed & tested Volvo models, designed prior to Ford's ownership (850/S40 P1/V40 P1/S70/V70 P1/S80 P1) have ever had recalls relating to any fire risk?

No, it isn't co-incidental. It seems the bigger the marque concerned, the less they care. It is Toyota who have been embarrassed most recently with their various throttle pedal, brakes, and fire-starting window switch recalls.

Volvo had been developing and testing the 850 since the 1970s - that obviously isn't viable these days due to the pace of change, but the balance between rushing a product to market and testing it properly needs to be adjusted somewhat...

name one company that does not have issues?
A certain one will never admit, but do a "friendly free upgrade"

Classic sensationalism. The Daily Mail would approve.

So it's 0.0146% of the 89,000 vehicles affected in the US alone.
'Killer' cars indeed...

As has been said, you could find a 'killer' aspect of any car, even a Volvo.

There's probably a higher percentage chance of death from using old, worn, mismatched cheapo tyres in the winter on a 2nd hand car, but that doesn't put most people off.

I had my heated seat elements on the 855 replaced 3 yrs ago under warranty recall by volvo (it was 15 yrs old then) due to "potential fire risk" as explained to me at the time by the Volvo garage where i had the work done for free.

My two month old Focus hasn't been recalled yet and the heater gets lovely and hot, without actually emitting flames
