Police got me - all on tape
The snow is here - this is leicestershire. The summer tyre freaks are blocking all the roads. Can't stop, can't go, can't steer.
On a downhill road I was stopped and ..... a Police car - Forensics - slid into the back. I had watched him in the rear view mirror before and only wondered what he was doing. When I looked away he got me. It was a good thump and I do not know whether there is any damage. Guess what he was on ...... Summer tyres. He said he had it all on tape. |

Winter tyres are a gimmick though.

I think only the roads units have winter tyres. I was talking to a copper before Xmas and he said when it snowed they weren't allowed to leave the station unless in emergency's.
Dancake, obviously you have never tried winter tyres. |

What a ridiculous statement. How exactly are they a gimmick when they allow you to drive and stop in snow when on summer tyres you would just be sliding around? And how are they a gimmick when they are far safer in winter conditions because the tyre still stays grippy because of the softer compound rather than go rock solid (as summer tyres do).

No Police cars have winter tyres (except 4x4's already fitted with OEM tyres)
It costs too much to have two sets, and to change them over. In fact, it would probably be detrimental because it would instill an even bigger sense of invulnerability and super hero driver talents. |

Could you say which area & and which vehicle, because I'd be surprised if that was regular.
Obviously if you got up close and read the script on the sidewall, then they must have had them. |

If you took just RPU (traffic) so say 40 vehicles. Each vehicle has to visit the service centre. So that's a downtime of a min 1hr.
Then you have to store 40 x 4 tyres - where do you put those? Cost of tyres is what? 160x 100?= £16,000 + storage + fitting costs + downtime whilst they are fitted. £20k vs benefit of ?? (note, I'm not say winter tyres are not beneficial, just that there is a cost/benefit issue). |
