I didn't notice you posted videos. It doesn't sound great.
Any difference between hot and cold running? If it's a lifter it's usually OK cold and gets noisy once the oil thins after a run. |

Had the Engine whisperer around yesterday evening
So just a quick update, I think its like milgo86 said, hoping its just a"stuck lifter or poor oil supply to the head caused by aerated oil (bubbles). Sump o-ring seals..I took off aux belt still same noise, no difference... I had a Engineer over yesterday who listened for good couple of mins, Car on, car off, started a couple of times revved up warmed up it never changed note, so he thinks it might be.........The Cam bearing, its going in on Wednesday to have sump removed & we will know hopefully then..? I was quoted that I might be "Looking at" Wait for it....€3,500.... what can I expect for this Price Full engine re-build..wk or two in L.A...any thoughts chaps
Cheers Vol.

Does the engine have a cam bearing? I haven't stripped one of these down, but usually the head/cam carrier is just line bored and the camshaft runs directly in that bore.
I don't want to come across badly, but is it possible he said crank bearing? That sort of noise could be cause by a spun bearing in the bottom end. For that money, I'd have thought he was pricing for your engine rebuilt. |

Hi milgo86, I beg your pardon I have Cam on the brain, I did mean to say crank bearing..he sounded pretty sure that this was the noise, spun bearing in the bottom end, I then asked what about replacing with another engine, & he told me that it wouldn't work first off you dont know what the engine was like that came from the donner car + my Car wouldn't except the other engine.? also he dosent do engine swaps hes just an engineer..I will keep yis posted chaps
Cheers Vol.

For what it's worth, I think inspecting yours is the best bet anyway. May not be as bad as you expect and you know the history of the engine.
If it is a spun bearing, unfortunately it could be due to the thin oil. I am interested to hear what happens. |

Hey, Vol, you mention it just had the belt replaced. No chance it's slipped a tooth or lost tension perhaps? It wouldn't idle as smooth I guess...
It very well could be a stuck lifter but, for what it's worth, why don't you drop the current oil, put in some quality 10w40 and a new oil filter, get it up to temperature and take it for a midnight burn down your private test track...the one just off the M7... You'd never know...she might free herself. Here's hoping!!!

Hiya Liam, thanks for your suggestion m8 ..I did have work done back a while ago.. timing belt replaced..it's funny this was the first thing I thought happened when I first heard the noise coming from the cam cover, she may have slipped a tooth or lost tension..anyways the Car went off this morning to the workshop on a tow truck, so I never had a chance to change out the oil or filter, sure look I will know more in couple days time will keep yee posted
cheers lad Vol.

It doesn’t sound like a big end bearing to me in the video, it doesn’t sound deep enough, and to constant.
The sump O rings are cheap and easy to do. To me it sounds too fast a tap at tick over to be a stuck tapict. It could be a bent rod , unfortunately, these engines did have weak rods You can fit an oil pressure gauge in the front where the oil pressure light switch is. €3,500 sounds a lot for a rebuild. Unless fitting a lot of fancy bits. Try the cheep things first, O rings, thicker oil and check the pressure. |
