Default Rolling the coal

Smoke my friends smoke.
On the way home from work this evening I came up behind middle Monty ( bmw z4) and his mate ( Toyota chaser). Both lowered beyond practicality and common sense.
Sniggering that they were doing 40 in a 60 limit as not to rip their sumps off, I decided to blast past them. We came round a sharp bend to a clear road so I planted it in second and hooned past the chimp chariots with the style only a 20 year old v70tdi can do.

It wasnt until they arrived at Montgomery towers ( much later) they proceed to show me the dash cam footage on their phones. All you see is a silver flash ( slight exaggeration). Followed by dense black smoke screen that any British secret service agent would be proud of.

Now then, my v70 doesn't smoke anymore than any other diesel I have had, and I certainly haven't noticed any under normal driving conditions.
No oil or water used in the past 5000 miles and is still purring like a kitten ( on 20 bensons a day), and does return 50+mpg.
So what's the problem? Do I need engine flush or some other cleaning product?
Or is it just how it is? Passed her emissions with flying colours a month or so ago.

It's what happens when you put anthracite on an open fire...

Are you sure them younger Monty's have not doctored the footage?...

Extra fuel = black smoke... Have you been tootling around and some excess fuel has been loitering in ones chambers sir. I say thrash the beast some more... Or see how the injectors are in case of wear causing overfuelling.

How many miles has the engine done?

Hello there , might i ask , was the filming done after dark ? . Diesel smoke tends to look appalling when headlights shine through the clag . My V70 tdi gave small puff on hard acceleration , always fast passed it's MOT smoke test , but resembled a naval destroyers smoke screen at night . How about posting the video clip , then we could better judge your evil polluting ways ( kidding ) I also found that having bumbled about for a few days any vigorous pedal action would blow out the loose soot in the pipes .

It was at night in the headlights.
Got to nip into town today to buy essentials ( beer and pizzas). I shall hit the loud pedal a few times and see what happens, she has done 200k so may have slightly worn injectors

Had it happen regularly with my V70 this, just a characteristic of the engine.
Plant the go peddle in 3rd and it naturally over fueled leaving a black cloud in the distance.

Old fitter once told me, you need a bit of black dmoke on a diesel under load to know it's working properly. Mind he was talking of natural aspirated transits at the time.

Don't think it's anything to worry over.

Paul.
