Experiencing random engine cut outs
Evening,
We have an XC90 D5 2007 and have started to experience the very same issue as reported in the first thread. Initially it would only happen when on the drive it would start, idle for a matter of seconds and then just die. It did however get scarier when my wife was with my kids and slowing down at a roundabout and it just died. The RAC were called, nothing found via diagnostic reading but it started and she turned back to home. Any idea would be great as we changed all glow plugs, air filter, fuel filter and had further 2 diagnostic readings at a local independent volvo specialist whom cleaned the EGR position sensor. Regards Asiiamo |

I would be monitoring fuel rail pressure and injector signals whilst driving.
Requires VIDA, it can record the signals as you drive, Also, VIDA will tell you a huge amount more information than a generic reader If you do not have the tools or the time or the ability, go to a Volvo specialist.

Evening,
The car has twice been to a Independent Volvo Specialist whom has been able to find nothing to point to why the engine is cutting out. On the last diagnostic by them it only showed ECM-6662 Glow relay control - Faulty signal This was for 2,3,4 & 5 of the glow plugs. These were all replaced but still shows when scanned. |

Thanks for your reply, would you think the issue woulld be the glow plugs or the electrical issues around them?

Once an engine is running, low plugs are no longer required. So any running problems on a warm engine cannot be associated with glow plugs.

Afternoon,
Took it back to the garage today and they did diag on it and now found the following: ECM-44A0 EGR position sensor - Signal too low ECM-44B0 EGR position sensor - Faulty signal ECM-6710 EGR control - Flow too low ECM-6720 EGR control - Flow too high The also said this is possibly caused by the swirl flap rod being missing. To replace the swirl flap mechanisim over £370 + VAT |

Swirl flaps are used when idling.
EGR is important as well. The missing or non working swirl flap mechanism will certainly contribute to our problems. Whether it is the root cause is hard to say. But they will need to be fixed. A blocked or stuck open or closed EGR will also cause idle problems I would recommend that you remove and inspect / clean /replace the EGR, and while that work is being done get the swirl flaps fixed at the same time. Its all related to inlet manifold combustion performance and thus will all be contributing to the running problems.
