Although it's true that production of the 33 and 44 stopped when Volvo took over, DAF had had two generations of successors for both cars on sale for several years. I'm not aware that DAF was in trouble when Volvo took over...simply that Volvo wanted to move into that market, and they had the financial muscle to make it happen.

Defining 'classic' is a tricky one. For some, a classic is something like a Lamborghini Muira, a Ferrari 250 GTO or an Aston DB5. For others, it's a Moggie, an mk1 Escort or a Beetle. I think DAFs deserve to sit alongside these 'practical classics' as a very normal car, with their unique drivetrain and considerable (yet almost unknown) success in Motorsport.

I have no problem is calling any car over 25 years old which has survived that far a classic (or at least a 'retro' car, until it reaches perhaps 35?)...but I do rank certain vehicles on a higher level...although they're usually so valuable that I'm never going to own one...

cheers

James

as I said, I'll keep my opinions to myself and leave it to other members to make their own mind up. However, I will say that given the number of posts you have made on a this thread it's a bit rich to accuse me of pontification!

Incorrect. The 33 had long gone by then and DAF were on the 66 which Volvo rebadged to the Volvo66. DAF even realised that the 66 was outdated by the time of the Volvo takeover as they had the 77 model ready to launch (Volvo simply rebadged this the 343). Volvo bought DAF as they wanted to move into the small car market.

Ah the 343, now your talking ,i well remember my old man buying one of these lemons (despite fierce oppostion from his two sons who of course knew even at a early age far more about cars than the old duffer did and desperatly wanted to been seen in a golf and not some naff volvo far more suited to shuffling some old blue rinse coffin dodger about) anyway the old boy buys one, safety, good solid swedish engineering blah blah, sadly however after a year of mechanical mayhem it dawned on him that this franco /dutch lash up masquerading as a volvo was indeed a pile of pooh and he flogged it,(tried to warn yer dad) and joy of joys bought a golf (however we couldnt push him far enough to get the coverted GTI badge sadly), anyway we were all happy, me and our kid could be happily transported about without the ever present risk of a apocalyptic event befalling us such as schoolmates/ friends actually seeing us in said lemon (or far more likely pushing the bloody thing.), and the old man was happy, he had a car now that actually started in the morning, didnt constantly disassemble itself whilst moving and he could actually turn the steering wheel without rupturing major muscle groups in his back and shoulders, the good old 300 series, a true classic, not.

Time will tell on that front...but there was an article in Practical Classics mag which said that the 300 series was one of a small number of 80s cars which stand to become the Moggie and mk1 Escort of the future. Highly popular in their day, with sentimental memories for a lot of children of the 80s. At one point in my childhood I reckon every other family I knew had a 300. Sure, it's not a beatiful car, but how do you define 'classic' anyway?

As for the mechanical woes...I'm no fan of the B14's reliablility (although it's a surprisingly good engine when it's working), and I when I removed it and replaced it with a B200, I also fitted PAS from a late 360 to my 343 (although with the B14, it's really not heavy at all...with the B200 is a different matter)...so I'll have to agree with you on those points.

However, the 343 won a major motorsport championship, which is more than the much-coveted-as-a-performance-car-of-sorts 850 managed, despite the hype. Shame they didn't make the road cars more interesting...the chassis had the potential.

cheers

James

Chow, why don't you tell us what you consider to be a real classic?

Right, I asked you all to play nicely and you didn't.

Therefore I am sending all home to your mummies and locking the playground until you can all play nicely.
