Thanks for all the advice. I have just relinquished my 10 year old XC90 with 216K miles on the clock. I had run it on Nokian Allweathers which were great winter / summer, UK / France.

If I go for the 19 inch wheels with 235/55 tyres my existing chains fit for the powdery stuff, so quids in! (well after the £1400 outlay)

Does anyone know if there is anything clever about changing the wheels with TPMS fitted?

The Volvo Supplied rims and tyres on my car it was a straight swap and then re calibrate TMPS, which you would do after every swap.

Just be careful, that all season tyres may not meet EU requirements in snow etc.

As your car is MY19 there's nothing clever about changing the wheels as you have the indirect TPMS system fitted. After changing them you simply hit the re-calibration button in Sensus.

When the new XC90 was first introduced (MY16) it had direct TPMS. MY17 onward have indirect TPMS which makes wheel swapping simpler.

If you mean the winter wheel/tyre packages then yes, we're talking about UK dealers.

Afaik, the only all-season tyre with the snowflake symbol is the Michelin CrossClimate.

But then again, there are snowflake tyres and snowflake tyres...

The Nokian all-weather tyres are called Weatherproof and have the 3PMSF rating / marking and are legit for Europe. (They are a Finnish company after all)

Thanks for all the advice.

Eurostar / TGV vs Driving
3 kids, self catering (take our own food), start in Leicestershire, overnight drive gives us 8 days skiing. No contest in terms of cost, hassle and for that matter time. Leave home at 1600, arrive Alps 0800.

Sounds as if you're planning to use chains from a previous vehicle - check that there is sufficient clearance between the inner side of the tyre and suspension components. I believe the clearance is limited, which is why the recommendation is for the spykes spider type of chain.

Indeed. The recommendation from Volvo is that chains cannot be fitted certainly to 19 inch and above. I have a feeling that 18 inch wheels are chain compatable, but of course 18s are incompatable with the T8.....
