I have a D5 XC90 with Heico official Volvo chip tune.
Heico were the componay that did Volvo tunes before Polestar was born.

I was lucky - it added nothing to the 2nd hand price, but cost 3000 CHF = 2200 GBP back in 2009. Yes really!

With full certification by Volvo that all legislative requirements such as noise and emissions are still met. And fully warranted by Volvo.
10 years after fitting, the engine is still going strong.
And the chip tune is still present, I see it when I connect with VIDA.

And zero impact on my insurance, as was a standard vehicle option.

Would polestar need to be declared to insurer?

Yes, anything that adds hp needs to be declared
If you are over 25 should cost nothing to very little
If you are under 25 forget it!

Strangely Volvo Insurance load 10% for Polestar. Shop around, Hastings Direct do not increase the premium for Polestar, Aviva do.
Polestar is definitely worth it, for all the reasons other post writers have explained above. Usually retailing around £800 it makes £5-600 a bargain.

My 2011 D5 comes with the Polestar upgrade as standard, as it was Police spec. I didn't have the opportunity to drive a standard 202bhp version though my old XC70 D5 163 was RICA'd, so vaguely similar (198bhp/320ftlb vs 202/310). My new XC is much faster, especially on top gear m/way acceleration.

Anyway, those sort of things are subjective often and not everyone drives the same way. I informed my insurers about the police spec and they didn't have it as a standard, so treated all the changes as modifications (brakes, suspension, ecu) and came up with the princely sum of £26 for the "mods" and a few quid for admin. Obviously every insurer is different & depends on your own personal circumstances but 10% increase in power seems to be a marker.

I have read that the Plod spec V70 diesels had a extra special Polestar map. They should have been reverted to standard before being released for civilian use but few where. You might have an extra special car...

"Chipping" blue light vehicles is common practice, I know the Volvo based fire engines are also chipped to deliver significant extra power - not for outright speed but getting a heavy vehicle with a very heavy load off the line quickly to reduce response times.

We'll have to agree to differ on that. Volvo themselves offered ex-factory power upgrades on their Emergency Services spec cars.

Sorry for sorta hijacking the thread, but was just looking at the polestar optimization page (for my country) and I don't see anything for my engine. When I look at the UK version of the same page I see it under the V60, but not the S60. Any ideas to why that is?

Thanks,
Paulo
