Default Sudden loss and then recovery of engine power

Hello,

Thought I would ask in this part of the forum with regards an issue I am having with my car.
I own a 1995 440 1.9D Si that has jusover 84000 miles on it. I recently had a stop solenoid failure which I replaced.

However I am currently having issues, all be it intermittantly, when driving. The car will suddenly loose power and even when foot hard to the floor on the gas pedal it will not rev any more. When parked up and in neutral it will not rev past 2500rpm ish. It will tickover fine (800rpm) with no problems and start on the turn of the key.

I did think it may have been fuel tank issue as when it occurred there was less than 1/4 tank left. But when it did it today the fuel tank was nearly full.

It can be up to 10 minutes before it starts to rev as you would normally expect. I did notice today when I turned the engine off the black manual fuel pump at the front of the engine was easy to push and pumped it until hard again. Even after that would not rev but after a short drive down the road it then came back with the rev and power as I would expect.

Car does 200miles a week and is service every 6 months. Any thoughts?

Does the engine have an EGR valve? Should be visable at the rear right of the engine.

When it happens and you press the accelerator is there any black smoke from the rear? If so, the valve could be as good as blocked.

When was the fuel filter last changed? Is there any sign of diesel fuel around the black hand primer pump?
