Also important to ask the garage to inspect all the pulleys/tensioner on the auxiliary belt on the same occasion

Get intouch with rufe. When I had a 850 I got the full kit and water pump from him and was cheaper than motor factors and better quality too

Yes but no.

Most garages that will use customer supplied parts wont offer any sort of guarantee on them.

So I would reccomend telling them to use Volo parts, and you pay the extra for those parts (and make sure that they write that the parts are from volvo on the recipt)

They won't need to.
It's VERY obvious if they've used genuine.

So having read all this, I thought "Fair enough then, I'll double check."

I called Sturgess in Leicester and they quoted me £264. Ang on, that's a good bit less than I was told a while back. "Ah, they probably suggested having a service done at the same time. [As mentioned by Cheshired5 on page 1] I would recommend that, sir." Yeah, well it's not due a service until May, so I'll pass on that if you don't mind. Let me ring you back in a minute about the belt.

I then rang the local place and got them to admit that they were fitting after-market stuff, and that to fit genuine Volvo bits would take the quote (including the water pump) to £476.

Sturgess it is, then, obviously.

But all this is completely the opposite of every experience I've ever had with main dealers in the 27 years I've been driving - Fords, Skodas, Toyotas, VWs, Nissans, Mazdas, they're all the same. I've always believed that genuine parts are the way to go if I can afford it, but in my experience, main dealers are a minimum of 20-30% more expensive than independents.

Not now.

Excuse me for being naive/unworldly/whatever, but I'm confused.

I got a quote from our local garage for a timing belt and water pump change, I didn't ask what parts would be used, it was @ £400 inc vat.

Checked with local volvo and they quoted £570 for the same job.

They both seem a little pricey compared to others on here. Is it a harder job to do on a T5 than a D5?

I am certain that Volvo specify about 1 hour labour for this job and seeing my Indy do it while I waited that is very accurate.

Just as a reference, we charge £99 labour plus £120.50 for the belt, plus the dreaded VAT... A genuine water pump is approx £80, a bit of antifreeze and an extra .5 of an hour to fit. That's using genuine bits... We recommend water pumps get changed at the second belt change, they're bomb proof, (unlike aftermarket ones!).
The point here is that should your genuine cambelt and/or tensioner fail, and it can be proved that it failed due to bad manufacture then Volvo will put it right, FOC. That's as long as it wasn't fitted by a numpty, and it's hard to get wrong!

Some say it only takes an hour on here.

The quotes I've had are for the following:

Indy labour is £162 inc vat
Volvo labour is £268 inc vat

Indy parts are: SKF timing belt kit £130 + vat. Graf water pump £48 + vat.
Anti freeze £18 + vat. So about £240 inc vat.

Volvo parts are £303 inc vat. No itemized prices given.
